Expedited M.A./Ph.D. Track (Fast-Track)
The Department of History offers an expedited curriculum plan for
exceptionally promising graduate students. Under this plan, the
student is first admitted to the M.A. program, and once enrolled
is recommended to the Expedited M.A./Ph.D. program. The student
admitted under this plan is required to complete a total of 66 (sixty-six)
hours of work; the first thirty (30) of these hours are at the M.A.
level, but the student is not required to write an M.A. thesis.
In lieu of the thesis, the student will take a three-hour Special
Problems course, which entails a 30-page paper based on primary
source research and subject to an oral exam. Beyond the initial
30 hours, the student will follow the requirements for all Ph.D.
students. The student completing the first 30 hours with a GPA of
3.67 or better may advance directly to the Ph.D. program without
a separate application.
