   Major / Minor Advising

How do I become a History major or minor?
You must file a petition with the History Department. To do so, see the History Advisor in AH 527.

If I am a History major, how do I declare a minor in another department?
You will need to contact the department in which you want to minor and speak to the academic advisor there. That department will then notify the History Department and the College of the minor.

What is a degree plan and do I need one?
Yes! The degree plan maps out the courses that you will take to fulfill all of your requirements for graduation--core and departmental. Keep your degree plan up to date and accurate so that you do not come up short when you are trying to graduate.

How many hours do I need for a History degree?
For the BA degree in History, you must have at least 36 hours of History classes, as part of the 120 total hours required for graduation. At least 36 of your total hours must be at the advanced (3000 or 4000) level. See major requirements for more detailed information.

How can I get courses I took at another university to count for specific History requirements at UH?
You will need to fill out a General Petition form, which you can download from the UH website or pick up from the History Advisor in AH527. Your petition must be approved at the Department, College, and University levels. For the greatest likelihood of success, provide as much supporting documentation as you can. A course description and syllabus are usually necessary for approval. Turn in your petition and supporting documentation to the History Advisor.

Can I complete a History degree on-line?
No. We do offer several upper-division courses through distance education, but most of these are via KUHT, tape purchase, or Cable. These types of instruction require you to come to campus twice during the semester for examinations. At this time, you cannot complete a History degree on-line.

Can I complete a History degree through Distance Education?
Yes, but . . . It is possible to complete a BA in History through DE, assuming you have completed all of your University and College requirements. Keep in mind, however, that only a small number of History courses are offered through Distance Ed (tape purchase, cable, satellite campuses, etc.), so the range of courses you can take to fulfill your requirements is significantly narrower than our traditional course listings. To enjoy the broad diversity of History's course offerings, traditional classes are a better choice for completing your degree.

How do I apply for graduation?
Go to Registration and Academic Records in 108 E. Cullen and complete a graduation application. Forms are available in that office or on-line. Deadlines for applications vary each semester; they are listed in the class schedule. If you have questions or problems concerning your graduation certification, please contact the History Advisor.

How can I graduate with honors?
To graduate with honors, you must complete at least 66 hours at the University of Houston and have a GPA of at least 3.25. If you successfully complete a Senior Honors Thesis, you may also graduate with Honors in the History Department.

   Courses and Grades

How do I add a course that is closed?
Procedures vary by college and department. In History, you must have the written consent of the instructor to add into a closed section. Add/Drop forms are available from the History Advisor in AH 527. Get the instructor's signature, and return the form to the Advisor.

How do I drop a course?
We hope you will have no need to do so. But if you do wish to drop a course, you must fill out a drop form. After a certain point in the semester (deadlines are listed in the class schedule), you must have the instructor's permission to drop. Instructors must give you a grade with a mid-semester drop, so be sure you are passing when you drop! There is a final deadline late in the semester after which you may not drop at all, except for serious non-academic reasons, such as a medical withdrawal from the University. YOU CANNOT ASSUME THE INSTRUCTOR WILL DROP YOU IF YOU SIMPLY STOP ATTENDING CLASS--FILL OUT THE PAPERWORK PROPERLY IF YOU WISH TO DROP A CLASS.

How do I get information about schedules, tests, etc., for the History course I am taking through Distance Ed.?
Please refer to the Distance Education website. They post syllabi and other information for all course taught through Distance Education. You are also encouraged to attend Distance Education orientation, which is typically held the week prior to the start of classes.

Where will my grades be posted?
In the History Department, most professors to not post test grades in a public fashion. See your instructor or TA for grades. At the end of the semester, you can check your final grade by using the University's VIP system several days after the last day of exams.

I already took History 3394, but I see it listed in the class schedule this semester with a different title. Can I take it again?
History 3394, 3395, 4394, and 4395 are so-called "Selected Topics" course numbers. That is, the content of the course, and often the instructor, varies from semester to semester. As long as the 3394 you wish to take has a different course title and content ID from the 3394 you already took, you may take it an have it count toward your degree. (Keep in mind, however, that other courses, which are not "selected topics", can only be counted once in your total hours.) If you have any questions, ask the History Advisor.

The History Department welcomes your interest in our undergraduate program and looks forward to working with you to help you achieve your academic and career goals.
