Due to the
generosity of friends and former faculty, the History department
is fortunate to be able to offer four undergraduate scholarships
each year. Three of the scholarships (one Douthitt and two Del
Barto) are awarded by the department on the basis of academic
achievement (highest GPA), with priority given to students with
significant numbers of credit hours in residence at the University
of Houston. These scholarships, usually valued at $750, are awarded
each spring to continuing students (generally juniors) and are
applied toward tuition, etc., on the student's fee bill in the
following fall semester.
One
scholarship, the Murry Miller Undergraduate Scholarship, is a
competitive award, involving an application. All history majors
with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 are eligible to apply; you
must also be enrolled in at least 6 hours at UH and expect to
be enrolled in at least 6 hours at UH the following semester.
Application materials include a 2-3 page essay, two letters of
recommendation, and transcripts. Application materials will be
available in the History Department each spring, usually in March.
The department
also gives honorary awards for excellence in History to graduating
seniors each spring.
