Hart Wins Third Prize for Empire and Revolution
History Professor John Hart has won the Honorable Mention award in the Herbert Eugene BoltonJohn J. Johnson Prize competition for the best book on Latin America in 2002 from the American Historical Association. The award will be presented to him at a ceremony on January 9 in Washington, D. C. Previously the book, Empire and Revolution: The Americans in Mexico Since the Civil War, won the 2002 Hubert Herring Best Book Prize from the Pacific Coast Council of Latin American Studies and the 2003 Harvey Johnson Best Book Prize from the Southwestern Council of Latin American Studies. Both organizations are regional groups of several hundred scholars each and affiliates of the Latin American Studies Association.
Based on extensive archival research, but eminently readable, Empire and Revolution relates the story of American penetration of the Third World that began in Mexico in the nineteenth century. It includes how the Americans arrived in that country, how many and where they were, the nationalism of the Mexican Revolution, the changes that took place in U.S.-Mexico relations during World War II and the Cold War, and the modern day situation with NAFTA and the Drug Cartels. The book can be ordered through its publisher, the University of California Press, at http://www.ucpress.edu.
