UH History Department Garners Third Teaching American History Grant
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded nearly $1 million to the Department of History, the HISD, and other partners, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to fund " Teachers as Historians, "a three-year project to provide high-quality professional development for history and social studies teachers in the Houston Independent School District.
This is the third time that the Department of History has taken a leading role in a million dollar " Teaching American History" grant. The first grant funds professional development opportunities for teachers in the 54 school districts in the Houston metropolitan area. A second supports a state-wide outreach program that utilizes videoconferencing and includes teachers in Austin, San Antonio, Waco, and the Rio Grande Valley.
