Professor Cong Earns Women's Studies Fellowship
Posted: August 22, 2005

Assistant Professor Xiaoping Cong recently received a $4,000 fellowship from the Women's Studies Program at the University of Houston. Dr. Cong, a specialist in late Imperial and early twentieth-century Chinese History, will use the fellowship to support research on a new project about a legal case that redefined marriage. The dispute arose in 1943 in northern China where the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) established its regional revolutionary government. The CCP overruled the father's traditional arrangement for his daughter and allowed her to choose her marriage mate. Beyond this dramatic story, Dr. Cong's study will explore the literary and artistic works produced in the 1940s and 1950s in conjunction with the case - works that constructed the communist gender ideology and in turn influenced the Chinese women's movement into the 1980s.
