UH Alumnus Recognized for Best Book in Texas History

Mike Botson, who received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Houston in 1997 under the supervision of Joseph Pratt, recently won the T.R. Fehrenbach Award for the best book in Texas history from the Texas Historical Commission. His book, Labor, Civil Rights, and the Hughes Tool Company, offers a parallel history of union organization and race relations at the Hughes Tool Corporation (headquartered in Houston. Published by Texas A&M Press, the book appears in the series on "Oil and Business History" edited by Dr. Pratt.

Dr. Botson teaches history at the Northwest Campus of Houston Community College, where he was named teacher of the year in 2004. His parallel history of union organization and race relations at the Hughes Tool Corporation (headquartered in Houston) is forthcoming from Texas A&M University Press.

Another UH alumnus, Amilcar Shabazz, won the Fehrenbach Award last year for his book, Advancing Democracy: African Americans and the Struggle for Access and Equity in Higher Education in Texas (University of North Carolina Press, 2004). He is an Associate Professor of American Studies and Director of the African American Studies Program at the University of Alabama.
