UH History Department to Host NEH Teachers Institute

The University of Houston Department of History will lead an innovative institute for Texas social studies teachers in partnership with Humanities Texas. Southwest Vistas: The Border in American History will view American history from Southwestern and comparative U.S.-Latin American perspectives. The Institute, which is part of the We The People initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities, will occur at the University of Houston, from June 4-7, 2006.

Members of the UH History Department, highly regarded for their scholarship in these fields, are among the Institute's speakers, including:

John Hart - Mexican History
Philip Howard - Caribbean and Cuban History
Gerald Horne - African-American History
Susan Kellogg - Colonial Mexican History
Steven Mintz - U.S. Family and Cultural History
Thomas O' Brien - Latin American History (national period)
Monica Perales - Chicana/o History
Raul Ramos - Texan-Mexican History and Chicana/o History
Guadalupe San Miguel - Mexican-American History

Additional UH participants include Nicolás Kanellos, Rex Koontz, Tatcho Mindiola, Nestor Rodríguez, and Marc Zimmerman.

The UH History Department also is pleased to announce the nationally known scholars who will speak at its Institute, including:

Norma E. Cantú, University of Texas, San Antonio
Mari Carmen Ramirez, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Vicki L. Ruiz, University of California, Irvine
David Weber, Southern Methodist University

The institute will offer teachers the opportunity to work with leading scholarship of U.S. and Latin American history and culture; share innovative strategies for teaching with primary sources; explore Houston's rich cultural resources as a model for using their own communities in teaching local, state, national, and global history.
