Martin Spearheads New Book Series With Oxford University Press
Posted: January 24, 2008

UH Distinguished University Professor of History James Kirby Martin has spearheaded the development of a new book series called "Critical Historical Encounters" in conjunction with Oxford University Press. Each volume in the series will focus on a major "critical encounter" in the history of the United States.

"Critical," as used in the series concept, refers to a formative, vital, formidable occurance, action, or event with a major impact in shaping the contours of the American experience. "Encounter" suggests a confrontation or clash, sometimes but not always contentious in character, with profound historical meaning and consequence.

Each volume will be highly readable, based on a strong narrative pulse and people orientation. Each will also include a fully-developed set of conclusions that will explore the implications of the featured encounter in the broadest scope of its significance.

In terms of market, the series will feature original books that possess widespread adoption appeal in U.S. Survey, upper-division undergraduate, and graduate-level courses. Ideally, each volume will also have significant potential for trade sales through local bookstores and national bookstore chains.

Joining Martin as series editors are David M. Oshinsky, Blanton Professor of History at the University of Texas, and Randy W. Roberts, Distinguished Professor of History at Purdue University. The first volume, now under contract, is expected to be published in late 2009 or early 2010. For further information, potential authors should feel free to contact Martin at jmartin@uh.edu.
