James Schafer joins the UH History Faculty

The Department of History at the University of Houston is delighted to welcome James Schafer to the faculty in Fall 2008.
Dr. Schafer earned a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Medical History from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to becoming a historian, Schafer worked as a bench laboratory technician. After completing his Ph.D., he was a visiting faculty fellow in the Great Works Symposium at Drexel University.
Professor Schafer is currently revising a book manuscript titled Finding a Niche: Doctors, Urban Change, and the Business of Private Medical Practice in Philadelphia, 1900-1940. His research on the medical marketplace and social geography of Philadelphia has been supported by fellowships from the American Philosophical Society, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Drexel University College of Medicine Archives and Special Collections on Women in Medicine and Homeopathy. Schafer has also presented his work at numerous conferences.
Beginning this Fall, Dr. Schafer will teach classes in both medical and contemporary U.S. history.
