UH Hosts Urban History Association Meeting in November
Posted: October 16, 2008
The University of Houston Center for Public History and Department of History will host the meeting of the Urban History Association at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (1700 Smith Street) from Nov. 5-8, 2008. The theme of the meeting is "Shock Cities: Urban Form in Historical Perspective."
The Urban History Association is an international society of scholars who research the history of cities in all periods and all geographic regions. The 2008 meeting will draw some 300 historians from across the United States and around the world, including scholars from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. For more information on the conference, including the program and a list of special events, please visit http://uha.udayton.edu/conf.html.
The plenary session on Thursday, November 6, 2008, brings together important researchers from Canada, Mexico, and the United States to discuss "Shock Cities: Lessons from North America." The session considers linkages among the cities of North America—past, present, and future—across geographic and disciplinary boundaries.
On Saturday, November 8, the closing banquet will feature a keynote address, From Heaven to Modernity: Suzhou in Late Imperial and Modern Times, by Peter Carroll (Northwestern University) and Michael Marme (Fordham University), the most recent recipients of the Urban History Association’s prize for the best book published in non-North American urban history. The keynote address is sponsored by the Tenneco Lecture Series at the University of Houston.
