One of the country's foremost authorities on Latin American economic history, Professor O'Brien is a recipient of the Robertson Prize and the author of The Nitrate Age and Chile's Crucial Transition. "'Rich Beyond the Dream of Avarice'": The Guggenheims in Chile," published in The Business History Review, constitutes one part of Professor O'Brien's forthcoming book on American business interests in Latin America. An expert on the application of social theory to historical analysis, he plays a central role in our graduate program in Latin American history and is currently the chair of the Department.
