This picture is taken from from the Main Outer Gate of the castle, looking along the east wall toward the north. The wall at this point shows the moat and the reinforced wall of an extraordinarily powerful castle. Had an enemy crossed this moat and taken this wall, there remained another moat and two more walls (both of those walls are visible in the preceding picture) before the defenders retreated merely to the towers.
