An expert in Brazilian religious history, Professor Chesnut
recently published Born Again in Brazil, an examination of
the Pentecostal boom in Latin American's largest nation. He
combines oral history with archival research to illuminate the
factors that impel millions of Latin Americans to convert to
evangelical Protestantism. His current project, "Latin America's
New Religious Marketplace," focuses on the decline of the Catholic
religious monopoly in Ibero-America and the development of
religious pluralism since the 1950s. Fulbright and other grants
have supported Professor Chesnut's research.
