History Scholarships
Due to the generosity of Alumni, friends, and former faculty, the History Department is fortunate to be able to offer five undergraduate scholarships each year. Three of the scholarships The Douthitt and two Del Barto are awarded by the department on the basis of academic achievement (highest GPA). There are two competitive awards including The Murray Miller and The Stanley Siegel Undergraduate Scholarships which are both competitive award.
The department also gives honorary awards for “Excellence in History” to graduating seniors each spring; no applications are necessary for these awards.

Application information
- Applications available in the History Dept, Room 524.
- Submit your application by Friday, March 14, 2008
- Submit appliction to Richard Frazier, (mailbox in 524 Agnes Arnold Hall)
- Download essay cover sheet
- Decisions will be announced by April 8, 2008.
Eligibility
- Sophomore, junior, and senior history majors
- Minimum GPA of 3.5
- In good academic standing
- Must be enrolled in at least 6 hours
- Two letters of Recommendations
Criteria for award
- Essay; a well-written and thoughtful essay, 2-3 pages (750 words maximum). Please respond to the following statement: according to the distinguished Professor of American History, John Hope Franklin, “The writing of history reflects the interests, predilections, and even the prejudices of a given generation.” Please staple your essay to the essay cover sheet (attached).
- Letters of Recommendation. Two (2) letters of recommendation by history instructors (from UH preferred, but not required). Please ask recommenders to give letters directly to Professor Philip Howard or to return them to you in sealed envelope for inclusion in your application materials.
- Transcript (minimum GPA of 3.5). Have a registrar’s Office forward the transcript to Professor Philip Howard, campus mail code 3003.
- Enrollment: you must be currently enrolled in at least 6 hours at UH and you must expect to be enrolled in at least 6 hours at UH in fall 2008.
